Empowering Ghana’s SEND Community Through Digital Safety Education

Post-Event Article: “Digital Safety for All” Workshop – September 2024

Digital Aid International proudly held its first Digital Safety Training for Ghana’s SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) community in Kumasi, an event that marked a pivotal step toward inclusive online protection.

A Historic Gathering

Held on September 18th, 2024, the workshop welcomed over 100 participants, including youth with disabilities, caregivers, teachers from special schools, and volunteers. The event addressed real risks SEND youth face online, such as online manipulation, cyberbullying, and access barriers to reporting abuse.

Our Special Guest of Honor, Madam Victoria Adinkra-Kwayisi, a renowned disability rights advocate and educator, shared an inspiring keynote:
“When we talk about access, it must also mean safety. We must equip our children—not just to be online—but to thrive and stay protected there.”

Key Outcomes

– Launch of a “Digital Safety for SEND” Guidebook tailored to the communication needs of students with cognitive and learning challenges.
– Introduction of inclusive teaching materials using visuals and simplified language.
– A pledge by participants to establish peer-led safety clubs in special education schools.

The success of this workshop reaffirms our belief: digital rights and protection must be universal. As Ghana advances online, inclusive safety education will ensure that no child, regardless of ability, is left vulnerable in digital spaces.
